Who We Are

IFC Corporate Environmental Responsibility Commitment

IFC is committed to driving positive change and fostering a sustainable future by reducing our carbon footprint, improving natural resource efficiency,  championing  climate resiliency, promoting sustainable procurement, and creating healthy workspaces for our staff.

GHG Emissions

Since 2006, we have calculated, managed, and reported on our GHG inventory, which includes emissions from leased and owned facilities, air travel, mobile sources, and purchased food emissions. We aim to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 20% by 2026. Additionally, we signed the Cool Food Pledge to reduce food-related emissions at our Washington, D.C. headquarters by 25% by 2030. IFC conducts an independent third-party audit of its GHG inventory.

Carbon Offsets

To offset annual GHG emissions, IFC purchases carbon offsets from IDA Borrowing Countries or least developed countries, following World Bank Group Guidelines. Our Washington, D.C. headquarters offsets building electricity consumption by purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs) annually.

Green Buildings

IFC actively promote the construction and operation of buildings that meet stringent sustainability standards. Through green building certifications including but not limited to EDGELEED, and WELL, IFC encourages the use of energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy sources, and sustainable materials. This initiative not only reduces our environmental impact but also creates healthier and more productive spaces for our staff.

Sustainable Procurement

Sustainable procurement is another critical component of IFC’s corporate environmental sustainability program based on the premise that purchasing decisions can have far-reaching environmental and social impacts.
